Horror adventure games have been in great demand for some time now. There is always a weak hero, a closed space in a large room and unkillable monsters. This is, one might say, a classic of the genre. From time to time, only the setting, style and some gameplay elements change, which, after all, are connected with this very style. Maid of Sker fully meets these criteria. The game took on the setting of 19th century Britain, and the myths of this country were chosen as the style. To be more precise, the myth is about a siren, whose singing made sailors do strange things. And we will now appreciate how this story was adapted to the realities of a horror game.

She claims that something strange is happening at a hotel called Sker, which her family owns, but does not say what exactly. She only asks you to believe in her fears and come immediately to save her from her relatives who have traveled a little. Thomas wastes no time thinking, immediately setting off by train to the desired location. Upon arrival, he realizes that some kind of devilry is going on here. Elizabeth is locked somewhere in the attic and can only contact Thomas by phone, the hotel is in a deplorable, one might say, destroyed state, and all the staff have turned into some strange monsters with deformed faces. Elizabeth contacts her lover by phone and gives certain instructions: there is a machine that will return everything to normal, but for it you need to find four special musical cylinders, which are scattered somewhere on the territory of the hotel and in its environs. The girl asks Thomas to be strong and find these cylinders for her. This is exactly how the short, but sometimes fascinating story unfolds.

Of course, she doesn’t have to grab the stars from the sky, and if the game had lasted a little longer, the game would have been frankly drawn out. The solution to the entire story is clear almost from the very beginning of the passage, and the unexpected turns look as if they didn’t even try to hide the piano in the bushes, just leaving it in the clearing. The game, by the way, according to all the patterns of the genre, has two endings, which without a twinge of conscience can be divided into bad and good. Unfortunately, again, according to all the laws of such games, the choice occurs almost at the very end, and your entire path before that will not play a special role.

Among other things, I would like to note the multiple stupid moments associated with the muteness of the main character. The developers were simply too lazy to voice the protagonist. Or maybe they just didn’t have enough money, I don’t know. But the fact remains that Thomas does not utter a single word throughout the entire game.

And he somehow communicates with Elizabeth on the phone, doesn’t it?? And this ruins the construction of the image in your head, preventing you from getting into the characters and their problems. Agree, it’s very difficult to worry about the characters if Elizabeth, straining herself, tells Thomas something, and the player only silently chooses lines in response. This destroys immersion as much as possible, leaving no chance for empathy.
